The Rise of Multifunctional Spaces

How covid-19 is Changing our Homes for Good

2020 threw us all for a loop, forcing us to make big changes that would have never happened otherwise. A blessing in disguise! With the extra time we’ve all been spending at home, it’s time to optimise our space and make that time as enjoyable as possible. Here are a few ways that home design has changed during the pandemic and will continue to become more prevalent as we make our way out of it.

Multifunctional Spaces.

The amount of time we have spent at home has never been so important. Our spaces have taken on new roles with one room often being our gym, our learning space, our office and our bedroom. This has pushed us further toward open plan homes and spaces as we accommodate the newfound responsibilities of these room.

Home offices have now become one of the most important additions of our new living requirements. As some companies shift to allowing more employees to work from home for the foreseeable future, the need for home offices continues to grow. With the need for privacy and functionality, our living spaces are taking on new names and roles in our newly changing lives.

Home gyms have become all but necessary in our new lives. Without limited access to public gyms, our living rooms, basements and bedrooms have taken up the mantle of responsibility of being our gyms too. With virtual training sessions on the rise, the need for a free space large enough to take these classes in has become a priority on many of our to do lists. With new requests coming in every day for wall removal to extend the use case of rooms and living spaces, it has become obvious that this is no longer a gimmick, rather the new direction for our lives for many years to come.

Another change in our behaviour is the amount of time we spend in the kitchen. Or dining and cooking habits are changing rapidly. With people trying out new recipes and adding to their knowledge and culinary skill set, the need for larger and more open kitchen plans has been on the rise. Throughout the pandemic people have realised the importance of being good in the kitchen, and the importance of having a good kitchen. An open plan kitchen allows the chefs at work to have access to what they need quickly and easily. Without excess material getting in their way, individuals in the kitchen are able to enjoy a sense of ease and control over their cooking that is simply not achievable in an cluttered and small space.
